Does Quitting Sugar Help Heal Autoimmune Disease?

We all want to be well, right?  Being well starts from the inside and works its way out, but at the same time, we need to be aware how our food, emotions, personal products and our outer world is affecting every aspect of our inner body.

Deep down, we all want to show up as the healthiest happiest version of ourselves, so we can have a positive impact on our friends, family and the world.  However, it is not always easy to be healthy in a world that is often tricky to navigate in that spectrum.

Our current sugar-coated world is just starting to get smaller due to an increasing number of people opting for a change in lifestyle through clean eating and exercise, thus restoring their health and vitality. People are increasingly becoming aware of the control and responsibility they have over their health and how they can own it every day.

So a question hot on our plates right now that I thought I would like to raise awareness on is…

Does quitting sugar help heal autoimmune disease?

For starters, to answer that question, we need to rephrase it, as it is too conclusive and there is never going to be one single answer for everyone.

Is quitting sugar a vital piece to the entire pie of health and restoring the body from the harsh effects of autoimmune disease?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer depends on which sugars you’re eating, how much you’re consuming on a daily basis and what stage you are at if you have an autoimmune disorder.  You may have removed all of the refined sugars in the form of bread, pastry’s, conventional sweets and processed foods, however, it is important to be aware that there are natural sugars from mother nature that have had minimal processing but may still have an effect on some people.  There is a quote I love from a great documentary called That Sugar Film.

“Sugar is not evil, but life is so much sweeter when you get rid of it”

Remember, sugar is more than just the white, raw and runny, drizzly stuff.  Much of processed foods, bread, grains, and pasta turn to sugar (glucose) when they enter our bloodstream.  So it may not be sugar on the outside, but in our bodies, it is.

I always opt for organic where possible, but the word ‘organic’ or phrase ‘natural sugars’ does not mean we can go overboard and eat as much as we want!

The word organic should not result in you abolishing your common sense when communicating with your body on sensible portion control. Be smart with the sweets, it is easier than you might think.

Let’s not forget:

Fruit sugar is still sugar,
Raw Organic honey is still sugar,
100% Organic Canadian maple syrup is still sugar
Coconut Sugar is still sugar
Rapadura Sugar is still sugar!

So, don’t drown or douse your life with it.  Focus on “less is more” and let the natural flavours of the dish speak for themselves.

In fact, large amounts of refined sugars especially — and even some natural sugars — can play a role in contributing to the growth of pathogenic bacteria, one of the six stages of dysbiosis, which is heavily linked to autoimmune disease stemming from the state and terrain of your gut.

So tell me, what are your results from quitting sugar, perhaps starting to minimise it, or opting for the “less is more” strategy?  Post in the comments section below.

Peace, Love, Health

  1. Hi Sammi – I was so happy to find your blog on Food Matters after suggesting to them we need to hear more about Ulcerative Collitis.
I was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease 15yrs ago, I was told by a specialist they have no idea why I have it and that it didn’t matter what I ate, just take these pills (salazopyrin) every day for the rest of your life.
I knew there had to be more to this than that.
So after many years of research and following blogs like The Wellness Warrior and Food Matters and now yourself :-) I have discovered that my 3 main weapons against the disease are: avoiding all highly processed foods, especially sugars and breads. Decrease stress and increase exercise. And caring for my microbiome with all kinds of probiotics and fermented foods!
I am now able to live a much healthier life, prescription medication free.
My mother suffers from depression and doctors insist on her taking medication, but I wish there was more advise given in regards to gut health and a probiotic regime put in place. Thank you for spreading more awareness in the importance of gut health, I hope for the day our medical professionals take this more seriously as well.

    • Hi Laura,

Thank you for sharing your story, it sounds very similar to my own! Food Matters and The Wellness Warrior were a major inspiration for me to pursue this path. I am so happy that you have achieved success with changing your lifestyle! I have also found in myself that stress, gluten/wheat breads, sugar and pretty much anything processed is definitely the root cause of the ulcerative colitis I used to experience. I definitely can relate to how incredible it feels to be living a healthier prescription medication free life! It is so heart warming to connect with people who are on the same page as you. I too hope for the day medical professionals take gut health, food and lifestyle more seriously.
      – Sammi x
