How are you Feeling?
Are you struggling with moodiness or exhaustion? Are you overweight or bloated? Do you have skin issues, infections, poor memory or low concentration?
Are you frequently getting sick? Are auto-immune issues or digestive issues sabotaging your spirits? Have you been diagnosed with a gut disorder or digestive health issues?
Are you fed up with being in a vicious cycle and want out?
Hi. My name is Sammi, and I was feeling that way, not too long ago!
But I made the decision that I was going to completely change my life so I could take control of my destiny.
Do you REALLY Want to Change?
Now I have another question for you: Do you really want to turn it all around?
Do you want to feel absolutely phenomenal when you get out of bed in the morning? Full of energy throughout the day?
Do you want a powerful immune system that is strong and keeps you well? Do you want to have a powerful mind with long-lasting stamina, a good memory, and all your organs functioning optimally?
The Foundation of Health
Health is everyone’s birthright. Our bodies and our minds are all designed to be perfect from day one. So why aren’t we?
From my own personal journey, I have found that the answer comes from this one simple statement: the foundation of wellness is based equally in the mind and in the gut.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine and creator of the Hippocratic Oath, went even further to say 2500 years ago, “All Disease Begins In the Gut.”
But it seems that this principle has been lost in the Modern Medicine Shuffle.
The Pandemic Rise of Auto-immune Disorders
Auto-immune disorders have been doubling every 15 years for the last 75 years. And there are over 80 different classifications of autoimmune diseases!
Diabetes, Obesity, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Leaky Gut, Hashimoto’s, Crohns, Ulcerative Colitis, the list is enormous. ALL are on the rise, and particularly so in modern countries like the United States, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
The American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA) estimates that there are 50 million Americans with autoimmune disease (more than heart disease and cancer combined).
The incidence of autoimmune disorders, such as Addisons, Crohns and Graves disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Hashimotos Thyroiditis, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis have been doubling every 15 years for the past 75 years. Autoimmune disorders are among the ten leading causes of death for women in every age group up to 64 years of age.
This is incredibly serious.
Until now, the medical establishment has been focusing almost exclusively on immunosuppressants for autoimmune management. Immunosuppressants suppress the immune system so it doesn’t attack healthy cells. And immunosuppressants definitely do work in some people, but not all. On behalf of the people they have helped, we are very grateful to the medical establishment for these treatments.
I was on immunosuppressants for 5 years, and while they definitely saved me from surgery (or worse), at a certain point the regimen was not enough to heal me, and on a lot of other levels, I was actually getting worse.
This is because immunosuppressants cause a host of other serious problems (known as “side effects”). For example, I experienced harsh skin conditions (pityriasis rosea), eczema, skin boils that had to be surgically removed (until I found essential oils).
And for some, the side effects can be much more devastating. In fact, the AARDA states on their website that “Commonly used immunosuppressant treatments lead to devastating long-term side effects.”
Side effects like infections, malignancy (cancer), cardiovascular risks, bone marrow suppression, cataract formation, and more. (See Long-term management of patients taking immunosuppressive drugs and Side Effects of Immunosuppressant Medications as they Affect Physical Fitness: A Physical Therapist’s Point of View.)
Further, the AARDA states that “Autoimmune diseases face critical obstacles in diagnosis and treatment, because
- Symptoms across many specialties and can affect all body organs (meaning the diseases are systemic and the most doctors don’t think that way)
- Medical education provides minimal learning about auto-immune disorders.
- Specialists are generally unaware of interrelationships among the different autoimmune disorders or advances in treatment outside their own specialty area.
- Initial symptoms are often intermittent and unspecific until the disorder becomes acute.”
So until recently the global medical establishment, through the promotion of immunosuppressants, effectively deals with the symptoms of autoimmune disorders, but they do not deal with the core issues. The core issues that form the basis of the Super Life Formula: Super Food, Super Gut, Super Emotions, etc.
There is hope on the horizon for a more integrative approach from the medical establishment. For example, at a 2014 International Immunonutrition workshop In Italy entitled “Eating for Preventing”, the concept of a paradigm shift in gastrointestinal management was introduced — a paradigm shift from linear cause-effect approach (typical of blockbuster drugs) to a network approach typical of Ecosystemic Complexity Management.
In other words, from drug management to management of the entire system through personalized lifestyle medicine and its four major inputs: diet, activity, stress and environment.
It is my job at SuperFoodSam to use the experience I have gained from restoring my health completely from over 10 years of Ulcerative Colitis to empower you and provide you with the information you need to regain or achieve complete health.
And we need to start with the most important aspects for long term health – your need for the right foods.
Facing Processed Foods Head-on
One of the most pressing problems facing modern humanity these days – especially in the West – is processed foods. We all love the convenience, but these foods are literally killing us.
As a young girl, I grew up eating processed foods (being Australian, I loved Shapes, Paddle-pops, Tim-Tams and of course, I was literally addicted to chips!) which contributed massively to my inflammation and a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis.
In order to achieve top wellness, fitness, immunity and clarity, you must choose foods that serve all aspects of the body and mind, and the ultimate area of health, which is your gut. This choice will lead you to greater mental focus, stamina, physical and emotional well-being.
At 16 I made the decision to go completely whole foods.
Eliminating Processed Foods is Just the Beginning
After a few months I felt great, improved my quality of life, had much better energy, but…I still had Ulcerative Colitis!
I felt I was doing everything right: eating whole foods, totally organic, juicing, smoothies, green powders, but I hit a plateau and couldn’t get any better. How could I change this? I had to dig deeper.
So I transformed again, transitioning from a clean whole foods diet to the GAPS healing protocol, which is very similar to the Paleo Diet, and which required me to remove all grains, starches, and refined sugars. From this, I experienced a huge relief in my body and literally felt like I had removed a blanket of inflammation. As a result, I have been able to get off a serious drug which required me to go into hospital every 2 months for a 5-hour infusion and my inflammatory markers in my blood tests are now better than normal!
To achieve the results that I did, a big piece to the wellness pie is you need to eliminate all processed foods, and switch to Super Foods. Here is the simple prescription for Super Foods:
- They should be grain-free or at least gluten free
- They should be mainly plant based
- They should have high amounts of good quality fats
- They should have small amounts of organic grass-fed animal protein
Absorption is the Key
Now we have all heard the saying “you are what you eat”, but the most important thing I learned next was “you are what you absorb”! I started to learn that the ability of my body to absorb nutrients is even more important than the quality of what I was eating.
And absorption all depends on the state and terrain of your gut. Without proper gut health, which in itself is a large topic, your body is always absorbing inefficiently, leading to a host of problems.
And when you add into the equation the lack of nutrients in modern foods, you run into serious long term health problems like
- Crohn’s Disease
- Grave’s Disease
- Addison’s Disease
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Systemic Lupus
- Coeliac Disease
- IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Leaky Gut Syndrome
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Gastro Infections
- Food Intolerance
- Metabolic Syndrome
- Liver Disease
- Colon Cancer
Gut Flora to the Rescue!
So how do we make sure our gut is functioning optimally to absorb all the nutrition it needs? It is actually a bit complicated, but the simple answer is:
Gut flora, otherwise known as intestinal flora consists of a large community of a variety of different good and bad species known as bacteria or microbiota. Humans have clusters of different bacteria in different parts of the body, such as the skin surface, the gut, the mouth and the genitals.
The brain contains 100 billion neurons, but gut micro-bioma contains more than 1000 species, with 1,000,000,000,000,000 or one quadrillion bacteria, viruses and fungi. That’s 10 times as many as there are neurons in the brain. That brings a whole new meaning to the term “gut feeling!”
The importance of incorporating fermented foods and a good probiotic in your diet is crucial in order to maintain this fine balance.
Lifestyle Changes are Essential
Ok, so it has become abundantly clear that we can no longer deny the role of the food we eat in our life. The bottom line is that we really need to change our lifestyle to stay healthy, and eating the right food is the most important part of the equation.
But how do we change our habits? How do we find the time for this lifestyle change?
In our increasingly busy lives, we have come to rely on the convenience of processed and fast food, and many people wonder, how can I find the time to cook from scratch, to plan and purchase the right ingredients, to ferment my own foods…not to mention to wean my children off the processed and fast foods they have come to love?
Do this Mind Exercise
To answer that question, first do a mind exercise. Think of your life and the life of your family now. Then imagine how you and your family would feel if your lives were completely different? If you wake up full of energy and stamina? If you have conquered your weight issues? If you are not burdened from auto-immune disorders? If you have consistent energy through the day? If you age slower? If you feel balanced and grounded and overall less moody and happier.
When you start to really take ownership of the experience of full health that you can attain through these lifestyle changes, the question is no longer “How can I do it?.” The question becomes “When can I start?”
Because what is the point of living a fast, convenient life of ill-health, when you can live a slower, more real, more fulfilled life of fabulous health?
You need to make the choice to cook most of your food from scratch. You need to focus on where your food comes from, what’s in it and what’s not in it. If you are reading a label, think “Why am I buying something that has a label?”
Finally, you need to have a completely new mindset around creating your own food. I encourage you to change your way of thinking about how you process things before they go inside you. You need start soaking, dehydrating, and fermenting!
Staying on Track
Many people get onto the road to health but often stumble or begin to feel lost. There are too many mixed messages on the media, and people have a hard time sticking to their new lifestyle, always falling back to their old habits.
I want you to understand three important things:
- First, Super Foods are just as easy to make as regular foods and taste incredibly delicious.
- Second, incredibly effective tools exist to help you break out of your habits
- Third, and most important, you don’t need to do all things at once. For example, you can start by limiting grains and cooking more of your own food. Then you can eliminate grains completely. Then you can increase your organics. Then you can increase your juicing. Then you can take a raw food course and find out how unbelievably delicious raw foods can be. Then you can start dehydrating. Then you can start fermenting. It happens in phases, and you don’t need to do them all at once (unless you want to!)
In short, you CAN stay on track! I myself went through this, I incorporated small changes into my life over a four-year period.
Now there is no “single right way” of eating that suits everyone. Humans are like dinosaurs, some will be meat eaters, plant eaters and some may even be both. As you go on your journey it is important to accept, know and understand this and rather than relying on what people tell you (including myself) go with how you are feeling so that requires you to be in tune with your body and its messages to you.
I’m not Sick – Should I Care?
The stages of gut disorder, also known as dysbiosis, range from 1 to 6, and they build upon each other. (See my Dysbiosis Chart to understand more.) While you may not be diagnosed with an autoimmune or gut disorder, but you may actually have early stages of one. With the modern lifestyle
of processed foods, excess gluten, excess alcohol, an so many more components, we are wreaking havoc on our guts every day unless we are aware of what we are doing.
It is very important to care, even early in your life. A healthy gut is for everyone, and the benefits of one will blow your mind! And you don’t have to be manifesting disease symptoms to be negatively affected by all the bad food choices out there. Whether you are experiencing an illness or relatively healthy – there is always room for improvement. Don’t you want to be alive in optimal health, and able to powerfully make your own choices in life?
Auto-immune and gut related diseases and issues have been on the rise since the 1970’s. Achieving strong and balanced gut microbial gives you a strong immunity and that is what will benefit the health of generations to come…including the health of your entire family.
