When I was asked back in early 2014 by my beautiful family how I wanted to celebrate my 21st birthday, I immediately knew it was not going to be the way that most people my age would be known to celebrate the big TWO ONE…the pre drinks, the party, the DJ, the venue, the embarrassing speeches and lots and lots of drinks to ensure you cannot remember anything about the night…
I love retreats. I have worked in them and plan on visiting a lot more so I can continue my passion for educating people about the importance of looking after as well as taking time out for yourself.
Portuguese Juice Fast
The idea of going to a secluded retreat somewhere in the Whitsundays was very tempting. Perhaps, lying in a hammock between two palm trees with a coconut in Malibu… or, a traditional villa on the shores of Greece or Italy…
I did some serious brainstorming and new I wanted to do something for my health, something to help me prepare for my GAPS healing journey ahead of me.
As I say – ‘the pre-cleanse before the healing takes place’
I was not exactly sure where I would be for my birthday, but what I did know was that I was after the opportunity to network and connect with incredible like-minded souls from all walks of life, as well as take some time out for myself.
So I was led to Juicy Oasis – Jason Vale’s (AKA the Juice Master) about 2 hours north of Lisbon airport in the stunning Portuguese mountains.
It was a Portuguese Juice Fast extraordinaire.
If you couldn’t already tell, I am a massive foodie, my cultural roots go back to my Grandmother who was French (New Caledonia) met my grandfather who was from the small Island in Greece called Ithaka.
Growing up, good wholesome homemade food was a strong emphasis in our home. It was only when I was diagnosed at age 10 that my mum decided to take it to the next level and really look into what we ‘thought’ we had been eating.
For a few years now, I have been curious and intrigued to experience living on nothing but juice for two weeks, yes that may sound daunting, but it is surprisingly doable. I was lucky I had been juicing for two years prior to this expedition, so I knew what flavors to expect – however I had never ‘lived’ on juice for more than a day! So I was a little bit apprehensive about that.
The retreat only has the ‘Juicy Cafe’ open on a Saturday where they have delicious smoothies such as Jason’s famous ‘Tahini Coca Beanie’ and the selection of fresh dips and super salads with local goats cheese.
People go to these retreats for many different reasons, from detoxing, weight loss, reversing cancer, diabetes or for people like me who are wanting to maintain their remission and good health by giving their system a ‘service’ just like we do with our cars.
As my aim was to not lose weight – so I had access to having a few extra salads and avocados throughout the week.

I found with a schedule like that you are so distracted and are with a group of people who are in the same boat as you that there is no time to think about chewable food!
However, by day 3 people were already talking about the amazing food they were planning to eat when they arrived home.
I want to share with you how amazing this experience has been, doing a cleanse really did help with my bloating, and giving my internal plumbing a break from digesting solids, I now understand the importance of that. I also gained such a natural energy high and increased mental clarity.
So whether you want to lose weight, detox or simply just wanting a break – Juicy Oasis is a little slice of heaven!
So you, my hero, I am handing the mic over to you. What are your favourite retreats you have been to?
